Dr. Wendy Riemann's Small Group Communication (COMM 2120) class had the unique opportunity to work with the St. Johns County Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller’s Office to create a public information campaign to inform residents about the role of jurors in the legal system.
“Gaining hands-on experience through a real-life group project is the best way for students to learn about communication,” Dr. Riemann said. “I am grateful to the clerk’s office for helping GW students experience workplace interactions and receive great mentorship that will propel them forward in their understanding of public office, civic duties, as well as their education and careers.”
“As an alum, I’m proud of the GW students’ hard work in developing several recommendations in how we can educate and motivate residents to serve as jurors in our county,” said Clerk of Courts and County Comptroller, Brandon J. Patty. “The students presented several great ideas for our office to consider. We look forward to exploring those options and are very proud of their work.”
The campaign lasted several months with five students dedicated to the project. Some of the recommendations being implemented include updating the clerk’s office website, better utilizing social media, and enhancing public outreach.
The County Clerk’s office is already planning the upcoming GW communication class project for 2024. It will be their office’s third year working with GW students on ways to better the clerk’s office’s initiatives.
