Chauncey M. Depew Endowed Professorship
The Communication Program is the seat of the Chauncey M. Depew Professorship in Communication, an endowed position established in 1936. Clay Warren, director of the Communication Program, currently holds the position.
Chauncey Depew was president of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad and a U.S. senator from New York (1899–1911). After the death of her husband in 1928, May Palmer Depew donated $120,000 to GW to establish a department of public speaking in her husband’s memory. The Chauncey M. Depew Chair of Public Speaking was dedicated in January 1930; Professor Willard Hayes Yeager was the first appointed to that position. The endowed chair is now known as the Chauncey M. Depew Professor of Communication.
